W ith a passion for helping those in need, Sandy Hennum serves as the director of Village of Hope, an organization whose mission is to promote self-worth and independence through the provision of temporary shelter and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness. Ms. Hennum ensures that she is a resource for the staff and families that come to her, as well as the community, by raising funds and passing the mission and vision of her company to the staff. Throughout her career she has been dedicated to alleviating homelessness and breaking the cycle to collaborate and help people reach their highest potential. In addition to her responsibilities with Village of Hope, she provides planning consultations and homelessness advocacy, and does speaking engagements as the chief executive officer of Hennum Consulting.

Ms. Hennum was inspired to enter her profession through her volunteer service, as she previously worked in health care and received an opportunity to work with people in need. This experience helped her understand that she was meant to be in a role dedicated to serving others. She earned a bachelor’s degree in community and patient education, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. With more than three decades of experience in recreational therapy and volunteer services, she has focused her organization on supporting families and creating self-directed work teams. An avid leader in her community, she has supported many local organizations, including Bemidji Leads, Community

Resource Connections, Community Education, and Getting Ahead in Bemidji. C ertified by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties, Wilfred W. Acholonu is a clinical pharmacy specialist and educator with over three decades of experience in the field. Dr. Acholonu became involved in his profession because he was knowledgeable about medicinal roots and plants after working with his father and was interested in further exploring how drugs worked. He began his career as a resident at the VA Medical Center in Portland, Ore., from 1983 to 1984. He continued to progress in the field as a staff pharmacist at Olin E. Teague Veteran’s Medical Center in Temple, Texas and served in a similar position at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla., in 1989. While working there, he also delved into education as an associate clinical professor of pharmacy practice and a clinical pharmacy specialist, remaining in the latter position since 1994. Dr. Acholonu has utilized his

F or more than 20 years, Nels Ackerson has practiced law and defended landowner rights, including in nationwide class action suits. Mr. Ackerson began his fruitful career in 1970 as an advisor for the Harvard Advisory Mission to the Republic of Colombia. With the knowledge he gained from that position, he became an associate at Barnes, Hickman, Pantzer & Boyd in 1971. After five years in that position, he implemented his leadership skills as chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, where he was an integral part in the passage of Title IX and subsequently was promoted to executive director. Not shying away from being a litigator and mediator, he made partner at several firms, including Campbell, Kyle & Proffitt; Sidley, Austin & Naguib in Cairo, where he opened his

B orn in Chicago, Ill., life to celebrating and preserving the area’s rich cultural and geographic history for future generations. An investor with experience in the stock market and real estate, she is also a passionate conservationist who is actively involved in efforts to lessen the use of substances that are harmful to the environment. In particular, she campaigned against Dacthal, an herbicide that some scholars have claimed can be been linked to lymphoma and Parkinson’s disease. Throughout a career in which she explored multiple interests, including architecture, editing and finance, Mrs. Albert has been an accomplished artist and received several awards for her portraits and still life paintings. She is also a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, which was founded in 1987. Other Elizabeth Franz Albert has dedicated a portion of her

affiliations include American Farmland Trust, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Defense Fund, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cousteau Society, of which she is a founding member. A former member of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Chicago, she has also bred eight champion miniature poodles. In recognition of her personal and professional achievements, as well as her dutiful civic engagement, Mrs. Albert has been included in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in Finance and Business. G ifford Harry Albright is a retired architectural engineer, educator and consultant. Mr. Albright became involved in his profession because he was driven and talented, and had artistic and mathematical talents that helped him succeed in two fields. To prepare for his career, he received a Bachelor of Architecture in engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1953 and a Master of Science from MIT in 1955. He began his career as a research projects director for the U.S. Naval Civil Engineers Corps from 1956 to 1958. From there, he went on to impart his knowledge to undergraduate

and graduate students as a professor of architectural engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. He continued to excel at the institution, acting as head of the architectural engineering department from 1962 to 1983, and earning status as professor emeritus of architectural engineering in 1991. He now serves as a building research consultant for G.H. Albright Associates, a position he has held since 1991. One of Mr. Albright’s career highlights was being the program director for the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. He has contributed to his field as the author of a technical publication titled “Planning Atomic Shelters - A Handbook” and as co-author of “An Illustrated History of Tamaqua.” Mr. Albright is an active member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Concrete Institute, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning Engineers. He is also affiliated with Ventilation and Refrigeration Engineers, the Construction Specification Institute, the Retired Faculty Staff Club at Penn State University, and the American Institute of Architects. Currently the vice president of North American facilities operations for the schools segment of Sodexo, Mr. Albright has utilized his expertise in many leadership positions. In 1976 he began his career as a commissioned 2nd lieutenant for the Ordnance Corps of the United States Army and advanced to become colonel in 1999. Throughout his career he continued engineer for the chief integrated logistic support office and large caliber weapon system laboratory from 1980 to 1982. C ardiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions of one of the most important parts of the human body — the heart. When dealing with complexities of the heart and its blood vessels, skilled and intelligent cardiologists like Dr. Harvey Alpern help to ensure that the organ is healthy and functioning. In order to be the best at his job, Dr. Alpern received a bachelor’s degree at Pomona College in 1960 and an MD from the University of Southern California four years later. He began his medical career as an intern at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital (now Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), where he remained and became a resident in internal medicine and cardiology. Dr. Alpern left Cedars- Sinai Medical Center in 1968 and became a cardiology fellow at St. Georges Hospital. While he has

reached many accomplishments in his career, his biggest was establishing his private practice in Santa Monica, Calif., which he ran from 1970 to 2007. Dr. Alpern has served as director of many boards, including those of Century City Hospital, the National Health Foundation, the Los Angeles Business Council, the American Heart Association, Inc., the International Academy of Independent Medical Evaluators, and CSIMS. He has also served as medical director of Executive Fit Health. During his lengthy career as a cardiologist, Dr. Alpern has imparted his knowledge through his contributions to professional journals. He is affiliated with medical organizations such as the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians, and is a diplomate of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Presently, Dr. Alpern is practicing through Alpern Consulting Inc., providing his disability expertise to those who have been injured and are seeking legal reparations.

K ennneth C. Althiser’s skills in geographical information systems analysis have literally put him on the map. As a GIS analyst for the arts and cultural affairs division of the city of Riverside, Calif., Mr. Althiser is responsible for consulting, conducting analyses, overseeing cartography and database design, and maintaining the database for local government applications. Specifically, he is in charge of overseeing most of the cartography and database design of local neighborhoods within Riverside. His unabating interest in mapping propelled him to the role of technical head of his team, which he has held for more than 10 years. Mr. Althiser received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Chapman University and then completed

graduate work in micropaleontology at California State University, Long Beach. Prior to working for Riverside, he strengthened his skills with a variety of roles and responsibilities. He worked as a geoprocessing technician III for San Bernardino County for 13 years and then became a senior GIS analyst for the Redlands Institute at the University of Redlands. He also served as a liaison to Riverside County for 12 years. During his involvement in the Salton Sea Database Program, a project aimed at restoring California’s largest inland body of water from 1998 to 2007, he worked with a team to establish a decision support infrastructure of data management and analysis tools. He also published the Salton Sea Atlas for the Redlands Institute in 2013 and is the author of three published articles on mapping. Mr. Althiser, a state liaison officer for the California Geographic Information System Council, looks forward to continued career growth in the coming years. Specifically, he hopes to build upon the current community’s geography and work on publishing more writing. T hor Alvegard believes that in order to be successful, one must be a leader. Dr. Alvegard has embodied those words as a medical educator and physician who prefers to aggressively treat his patients’ illnesses. He obtained a medical degree from the Free University of Berlin in 1968 and received a PhD from Lund University in 1989. Having become involved in cancer diagnosis and treatment with a focus on leukemia in 1970, he is an expert at treating Ewing’s sarcoma and osteosarcoma and has conducted research on prognostic factors in soft-tissue sarcoma, high-dose chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and total body irradiation. His diligence and medical experience aided him in his position at Lund University, where he was an assistant professor and diplomate, and served him in his role as director of cancer epidemiology at the same institution from 2000 to 2008. Dr. Alvegard has contributed his medical expertise to many professional journals on various

topics, including oncology, surgery and clinical immunology. He has been a board member of and economic advisor to the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group and is an active member of EMSOS, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He was featured in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 2011 and Who’s Who in the World from 2011 to 2016. Although retired, he is still helping to fight cancer and related diseases through his involvement in clinical trials across Spain, England, Germany, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

A llamay E. Anderson is a retired educator who has dedicated over 50 years to the health care field. Ms. Anderson received a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College, a Master of Science in education from Fordham University, and a professional management certification from Adelphi University in 1978. Once she completed her education, she became a school food service dietitian for the New York City Board of Education, which is a role she served in for 20 years. In 1988 she began teaching home and career skills at Louis Armstrong Middle School, then continued to excel, accepting positions as a special education teacher, coordinator of AIDS resources, and adjunct home economics lecturer. Ms. Anderson’s

skills and expertise led her to become the owner of AEA Development Service, an organization whose mission is to provide special education, support, media, technology and instructional services, in addition to professional and leadership development. She continued expanding her repertoire when she became a professional development consultant in 1978. Although retired, Ms. Anderson remains active in her field through her affiliation with the United Federation of Teachers' Retired Teachers Chapter. She has received various awards for her tireless service to her community and field, including a Positive Image Award from Key Women of America's Concourse Village Branch and a Community Service Award from New York State United Teachers. She also supports organizations for African-Americans as a member of the NAACP, for which she has been a Women’s History Month honoree and served as health chair for 10 years, and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc., which presented her with a professional award. Ms. Anderson was formerly an executive board member of the Fordham University School of Education Alumni Association.

E cologist and environmental scientist Bruce Lord Bandurski has over 30 years of experience in his field and a dedication that led him to have a successful career. He obtained a Bachelor of Science with honors from the Honors College of Michigan State University and completed graduate work at George Washington University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School (now Graduate School USA) in 1965 and 1966, respectively. While obtaining his undergraduate degree, he worked as a park ranger for Yellowstone National Park for one year. He then went on to obtain positions as a science reference analyst for the Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control (a predecessor of the Environmental Protection Agency)

During the course of his career, Mr. Bandurski has made great strides, including being the originator of the no-action alternative in the federal government’s National Environmental Policy Act process. He also engineered the concept of tiered and scaled environmental impact statements, catalyzed the first strategic planning endeavor of the International Joint Commission in the U.S. and Canada, and developed the first college-level course on the NEPA process. Additionally, he developed standards for recruiting and hiring the first systems ecologist for the federal government and was its first ecomanagement advisor. Mr. Bandurski traces his ancestry to Saer de Quincy and John “Lackland,” king of England, whose resolute mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine (queen of England after she was queen of France). The 25 generations between Bruce Bandurski’s birth in 1940 and King John’s birth in 1166 included a dozen passengers arriving in North America on the ship known as the Mayflower in the year 1620. More than 100 years ago, his great-grandfather, Herbert Mayhew Lord, was listed in an early Marquis volume.
