D r. George Dunea is a successful nephrologist who was born in Romania. He received his medical degree from the University of Sydney in 1957, and a year later, started as an intern at Royal North Shore Hospital. He continued his education in both Australia and England as a resident in internal medicine. Dr. Dunea immigrated to the United States in 1964, working as a fellow at the Cleveland Clinic under Dr. Willem J. Kolff, the inventor and developer of renal dialysis, followed by a two- year fellowship in nephrology at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. In 1969, he became director of the department of nephrology and hypertension at Cook County Hospital, and in 1980, he became a professor of medicine at the University of Illinois. Dr. Dunea has also used his expertise to write chapters in several medical books and contribute articles to many professional journals. He has been the editor-in-chief of

Hektoen International, a journal dedicated to medical humanities, since 2008. His accomplishments include being a chief founding member of the division of nephrology at Cook County Hospital and medical director of the Fresenius Dialysis Center in Chicago. However, the highlight of his career was becoming president and chief executive officer of the Hektoen Institute of Medicine, where he has been since 1991. Dr. Dunea is also affiliated with several organizations in America and England, such as the American Medical Association and the British Medical Association. His contributions to the field of medicine have garnered many awards, including a Lifetime of Service Award from the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois in 2008.
