S ince 1957, Charles P. Bourne has shared his knowledge and expertise in information science. Throughout his career, Mr. Bourne has worked diligently to establish himself as an information scientist and educator. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he was the recipient of the Annual Award of Merit from the American Documentation Institute in 1965. With determination and perseverance, he began his professional career as a senior research engineer at Stanford Research Institute from 1957 to 1966. His nine years at the institute would prepare him to obtain many prestigious executive positions thereafter, including vice president for Information General Corp., director of the University of California, Berkeley Libraries; and vice president of the general

He has also imparted his knowledge to students as a professor in residence and a guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley and as a Sarada Ranganathan lecturer. Mr. Bourne is a member of the Association for Information Science and Technology, the American Library Association and the National Information Standards Organization. He is the author and co-author of technology-related books, including “Methods of Information Handling,” “Technology in Support of Library Science and Information Service” and “A History of Online Information Services,” and has contributed articles to many professional journals in the field. To prepare for his fruitful career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1957 and a Master of Science in industrial engineering from Stanford University in 1963. Currently, Mr. Bourne is working on an oral history project for the Computer History Museum and the Association for Information Science and Technology.
