D r. Christopher C. Colenda has been a successful academic physician and administrator for over 33 years. Prior to Dr. Colenda’s current position as of counsel with Witt/ Kieffer Search, he served as the third president and CEO of West Virginia University Health System from January 2014 to September 2016. From 2009 to 2015, Dr. Colenda was chancellor for health sciences at West Virginia University. During his tenure, he accomplished a number of strategic initiatives, such as establishing a School of Public Health, improving the integration and operation of health care delivery at the academic medical center, leading efforts resulting in the awarding of NIH’s IDeA Clinical andTranslation Research Award to

Prior to his service at WVU, he served as the Jean andThomas McMullin Dean of the College of Medicine at Texas A&MHealth Sciences Center and vice president for clinical affairs. As dean he established a new four-year A&Mmedical school campus at Scott &White Health System, three additional clinical campuses in regional communities, and the Texas A&MCollege of Medicine’s Institute for Regenerative Medicine. An accomplished health services and clinical investigator in geriatric psychiatry and public health, he is an elected member of AOA and Sigma Xi. Notable honors include being the former chair of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education, vice chair and treasurer of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. He was also featured on Becker’s Hospital Review List of 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems and received the Edithe J. Levit Distinguished Service Award from the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Psychiatric Association’s JackWeinberg Award in Geriatric Psychiatry, the Outstanding Faculty Award from the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, and the Alumni Star Award from the School of Medicine of Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Colenda earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Public Health in health services administration from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry fromWittenberg University.
