B orn in Romania, Robert Mandl had dreams of utilizing his technical skills to embark on a career in computer science. To prepare for a fruitful career, Dr. Mandl obtained a Bachelor of Science in math, physics and linguistics and a Master of Science in math from Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1963 and 1965 respectively, a Master of Science in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1980 to 1983, he worked as a senior software engineer for SofTech Inc. Taking the knowledge and experience he gained there, he went on to become a manager of software engineering at Analogic Corporation for six years and then a senior software engineer in 1990. AT&T Bell Laboratories, a principal engineer for the Digital Equipment Corporation, and an independent researcher in Cambridge, a role he has held since 2001. In addition to expanding his research, Dr. Mandl is also a presenter in the field. He contributed his intellect as a compiler and editor of the MIT Folk Dance Club song book published in 1975 and has written articles featured in many professional journals. His achievements include the origination of TAXOR, evaluating Sudoku genomics and the complexity of Sudoku puzzles, and developing Tonalized Pinyin, Framescript and TASKMON. Dr. Mandl is a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Mathematical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, the IEEE Computer Society, the Linguistic Society of America, and the Mathematical Association of America. He has been featured in Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
