N ancy GarfieldWoodbridge launched her first children’s book, “The Tuesday Elephant,” illustrated byTom Feelings and published byThomas Y. Crowell, in 1968. In 1970, G.P. Putnam’s Sons published her book on Thailand, called “The Dancing Monkey,” which was illustrated by Rocco Negri. Influenced by the works of Pearl Buck, Lin Yutang and RabindranathTagore, she saw the need for books about African-American, Native American, Asian-American, and Hispanic-American children that were not readily available in the U.S. While at Bennington College on a scholarship, Ms. GarfieldWoodbridge worked during her winter and summer vacations at the Wenner Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research from 1952 to 1955 on publications such as the

International Directory of Anthropological Institutions and “Man’s Role in Changing the Face of the Earth.” In 1955, after graduation, she became a picture editor at Forbes Magazine. After that she became editor-in- chief and owner of The Gifted Child Magazine in 1956. Ms. GarfieldWoodbridge became a research associate to the vice president at the New York Institute of Technology and then became director of special projects for the Girl Scouts of the USA. There she directed the Girl Scout handbooks for 6- to 12-year-olds, called Worlds to Explore, Juvenile Justice Publications, and preschool publications used by Daisy Girl Scouts, e.g. “Let’s Take a Walk.” While with the Girl Scouts, Ms. GarfieldWoodbridge worked on more than 60 publications, as well as grant requests for initiatives funded by the U.S. Department of Education, such as the Careers to Explore and FromDreams to Reality programs, and Education for Parenthood, which was funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. After leaving the Girl Scouts of the USA, she published many books Her next book, “Sons of Darkness,” will be published in 2018. Ms. GarfieldWoodbridge is a member of many creative arts organizations, including the Academy of American Poets, the Authors Guild, the Milford Fine Arts Council and the Society of Children’s BookWriters and Illustrators.
