D r. James Powell Ganley is a certified ophthalmologist with over four decades of experience in his field. A diplomate of the American Board of Examiners, the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Ganley paved his own way for a successful career. He received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Mount St. Mary’s University in 1959 and a medical degree from Georgetown University in 1963. After graduating with his credentials, he became an intern at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Two years later, he obtained a new position as a resident in

ophthalmology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He served in that capacity for two years before relocating to Baltimore and beginning a residency in preventative medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 1969. He obtained a Master of Public Health before receiving a Doctor of Public Health from the same institution in 1972. As he continued to advance in his career, he served as an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Arizona Medical Center and held several positions at Louisiana State University Medical Center, including associate professor, department head, assistant dean of clinical affairs, and professor. He has contributed to chapters in medical books, been on several editorial boards, and is a founding editor of Ophthalmic Epidemiology. Dr. Ganley remains active in his field as a member of many medical organizations, including the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the International Society of Geographical & Epidemiological Ophthalmology, and the American College of Epidemiology. He received the Promotion of Peace and Vision Award from the International Eye Foundation for his service and contributions to the field.
