F or over 40 years, Dr. Richard G. Coss has successfully maintained a career in education. Since 1974 he has been teaching undergraduate and graduate students at the University of California, Davis about human behavior and the way the mind works. He began his career as an engineer-scientist for the lunar base study at the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1962 to 1966. Before earning tenure at the University of California, he worked internationally as well, as a research director for Compagnie de L'Esthétique Industrielle and a freelance industrial designer in Paris. He is the editor of the book “Environmental Awareness: Evolutionary, Aesthetic & Social Perspective” and has contributed to professional journals in the field. Throughout his career Dr. Coss has reached many achievements, including obtaining patents in the United States, France and England for the pupillometer, which measures physiological arousal. He is the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award from the University of California and was awarded grants from NASA,

the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Cross remains active in his field as a fellow of NASA’s Ames Research Center and a member of the International Society of Arts, Sciences and Technology; the International Society for Ecological Psychology; and the Animal Behavior Society. Dr. Coss earned a Bachelor of Science in architecture in 1962 and Master of Arts in design in 1966 from the University of California, as well as a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Reading in 1972.
