R etired electrical engineer and educator Dr. Pritindra Chowdhuri made a name for himself in his field through hard work, dedication and determination. Dr. Chowdhuri earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Master of Science at the University of Calcutta in 1945 and 1948, respectively; a Master of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1951; and a Doctor of Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1966. After earning his credentials, he embarked on his professional journey, beginning as a junior engineer in the lighting arresters section of Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1951 to 1952. in the high-voltage laboratory at Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon.

He remained in Europe as a research engineer for the High Voltage Research Commission through 1965 and returned to the United States that same year. He began working in Massachusetts as a development engineer in the high-voltage laboratory at General Electric before excelling as an engineer in New York, Pennsylvania and New Mexico. In 1969, he transitioned into the education field as a lecturer at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College and continued imparting his knowledge to students for more than two decades as a professor of electrical engineering at Tennessee Technological University. He earned the title of professor emeritus in 2005. Dr. Chowdhuri is the author of the second edition of “Electromagnetic Transients in Powers Systems,” and has received patents in the field. He continues to be active as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, IEEE, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the New York Academy of Sciences.
