O ver the course of 30 years, Dr. John Bruhn has made a name for himself in education and taken on responsibilities in several roles. Before teaching, he honed in on his curiosity regarding the field now known as behavioral medicine as a research sociologist for Grace-New Haven Hospital from 1960 to 1961 and the University of Edinburgh from 1961 to 1962. After gaining the knowledge necessary to teach, he became a member of the faculty at OU Medical Center. Because Dr. Bruhn was fascinated with people from different cultures and interested in how culture can influence illness, he wanted to link behavioral patterns with health issues to be able to customize treatments to an individual’s biological makeup. He remained at OU Medical Center for 10 years before becoming a professor in and chairman of the department of human ecology in 1969. He continued to progress

at various institutions, including the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he served for 19 years, and the University of Texas at El Paso, where he served for four years. During his career, he has maintained positions as a professor of management and policy sciences at the UTHealth School of Public Health and as an adjunct professor of sociology at Northern Arizona University. Having retired as Pennsylvania State University’s provost and dean in 1999, Dr. Bruhn continues to lead a very active life as a member of several health-related organizations. He has thoroughly enjoyed the years since his retirement, training to become a hospital chaplain in 2002 and continuing to contribute to his field as a consultant. Dr. Bruhn has also dedicated the last 10 years of his life to volunteering his time and services to people who are in hospice, as well as writing 23 books, including “Occupation Health as Human Ecology,” “A Doctor in the House?: Information for Parents and Spouses of Premedical and Medical Students,” “Values in Health Care: Choices and Conflicts” and “Sociological Practice: Intervention and Social Change.”
