D r. Royal Eugene Bales taught courses in philosophy, religion and theology to undergraduate and graduate students at Menlo College for over 25 years. To prepare for his career, Dr. Bales obtained a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Arts from Wichita State University in 1956 and 1960 respectively, and a PhD from Stanford University in 1968. Before making a home at Menlo College, he taught music to adolescents in Kansas Public Schools from 1956 to 1957 and again from 1959 to 1960. He switched gears to higher education as a teaching assistant at Stanford University before becoming an adjunct faculty member at Wichita State University and California State University. During his tenure at Menlo College, he held positions as an instructor of philosophy, professor, chairman of social sciences and humanities, dean of liberal arts, provost, and standing member of the president’s advisory council. professional and community service activities, which include acting as honorary governor of Harris-Manchester College at the University of Oxford since 1994. He was also on the board of directors of the El Camino Youth Orchestra Association from 1983 to 1987 and served as its president from 1985 to 1987. An author and contributing author of philosophical publications and papers submitted to professional journals, he continued to research in his field while completing postdoctoral studies. Dr. Bales is an active member of the American Philosophical Association and has received many grants and fellowships for his work. Additionally, Dr. Bales served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army Reserves in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1963.
