R ichard William Laherty specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system, including congenital anomalies, trauma, tumors, vascular disorders, infections of the brain or spine, stroke and degenerative diseases of the spine. Since 2010, Dr. Laherty has been helping patients with spine and brain trauma in the Brisbane region of Australia as a consultant neurosurgeon and the deputy director of Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he was previously a spine trauma fellow and visiting medical officer of neurosurgery. Before settling at the facility, he was a spine surgery fellow at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2009, and a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland. Early Management of Severe Trauma course at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). Additionally, he served as a clinical research fellow for the QueenslWand Cancer Fund from 2003 to 2006. Dr. Laherty has contributed scientific papers to professional journals and was recognized for his excellence as a surgical teacher by the University of Queensland Medical Society in 2002. He received the Peter Leech Prize in 2004, and a spine surgery fellowship sponsored by Stryker in 2009, as well as a commendation from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2014. He remains active in his field as a member of the Society of Lateral Access Surgery (SOLAS), the North American Spine Society, the Australian Medical Association, the Australasian Trauma Society, the Spine Society of Australia, and the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia. To prepare for his career, he earned a medical degree from the University of Queensland in 1996.
