A s a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Ray Edward Kidder has utilized his expertise and years of professional experience to explore and identify the principles that govern the structure and behavior of matter, including the interaction between energy and matter. Dr. Kidder was inspired by his father, Harry Kidder, who was in charge of the IRT electric power plant in New York City, to pursue a career in science. Before beginning his career, he served with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. Upon his return, he focused on his education, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in mathematics fromOhio State University in 1947 and 1948, respectively. After careful consideration, he changed his focus, earning a Ph.D. in physics from the same institution in 1950. He career began shortly thereafter as a physicist, conducting

research at California Research Corporation in La Habra, California, from 1950 to 1956. After leaving that company, he took on a similar position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, focusing on computer modeling and weapons design without actual ignition of a thermonuclear device, a position he held until his retirement in 2014. Throughout his career, Dr. Kidder has reached many achievements, including research in physics of nuclear weapons, inertial confinement fusion, megagauss magnetic fields, laser isotope enrichment and containment of low-yield nuclear explosions. The highlight of his career has been receiving the Leo Szilard Award jointly with Roy Woodruff. With the knowledge and experience he has gained from his professional career and research, he has been able to share his expertise as a contributor to chapters to books. His innovative work in the field earned him the Humboldt Award from the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation in 1988. Additionally, he has been featured in many versions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who in the World.
