E conomists like Dr. Arnold Harberger have the responsibilities of using economic theories and knowledge to provide specialist advice, as well as studying data and statistics using their understanding of economic relationships to uncover trends. Dr. Harberger began his career as an assistant professor of political economy at Johns Hopkins University from 1949 to 1953. After serving at that institution for four years, he made a home for himself at the University of Chicago, where he held several positions, including associate professor of economics, chairman of the department, Gustavus F. and Ann M. Swift distinguished service professor, director of the Center for Latin American and economics studies, and professor. In between his tenure at the University of Chicago, he was also a professor of economics at UCLA. Dr. Harberger has reached many great achievements throughout his career.

He is the author and editor of many books related to the field and has contributed science papers to professional journals. His awards include being a Guggenheim fellow, a Fulbright Scholar, a Faculty Research Fellow of the Social Science Research Council, a Ford Foundation Faculty Research Fellow, and the recipient of the Bradley Prize in 2009. He remains active in his field through his affiliations with the Econometric Society, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Economic Association, the Western Economic Association International, the Royal Economic Society, the National Tax Association, the Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis, and the National Academy of Sciences. To prepare for his career, he obtained a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1947 and 1950, respectively. Dr. Harberger has several honorary degrees from international institutions, including National University of Tucumán, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Central American Technological University, Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, Universidad Americana and Universidad del Desarrollo.
