W hat do you get when you mix a genetic genealogist, author, lecturer and librarian together? The esteemed David R. Dowell, a jack-of-all-trades who has contributed tremendously to several fields. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history at Oklahoma Baptist University while maintaining his position as a teacher at Wilson Junior High School. After leaving the school in 1965, he obtained a Master of Arts in Latin American history. In 1972 he became the head of library administrative services at Iowa State University and received a Master of Library Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that same year. He left the institution and obtained a position at Duke University as an assistant university librarian. During his time at Duke and later while at the Illinois Institute of Technology, he obtained a Ph.D. in library science

from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Having gained the necessary knowledge and skills, Mr. Dowell enjoyed a successful career in which he was able to apply his expertise in various positions and write extensively on genealogy, libraries and education. Outside of his career, he has been a chairman of the American Library Association’s genealogy committee and extended his services to Biblioteca do Centro Batista in Brazil and the governor’s conference on libraries and information services in Raleigh, N.C. Although Mr. Dowell is retired, he maintains memberships with several organizations and has served his community as a trustee for the Glenwood- Lynwood Public Library District and a board member at large for the Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society since 2015. He received an EBSCO Community College Learning Resources and Library Achievement leadership award and a special award for public relations from the John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers University. He is currently a consultant for the county commissioner’s library planning committee in Durham, N.C.
